Stop Blogger from Redirecting Blogspot to Country Specific URLs

Stop Blogger from Redirecting Blogspot to Country Specific URLs

Google now redirects Blogger blogs to country-specific domains. For instance, if you open in your web browser, you will be redirected to if you are located in India or to if you are accessing the blog from UK.

Google does country-specific redirection for selective censorship – that means they can easily censor or block a blog post, or other entire blog site, in one country but still serve that page in other geographic regions. Blog redirection only occurs if you are on a blogspot domain and not if your Blogger blog is on a custom domain.

Why Did Google Do This?

Google has always supported the expression of views, and they stated as much on their official blog. In the post Free expression and controversial content on the web, which was published in 2007, it said "Our world would be a very boring place if we all agreed all the time. So, while people may strongly disagree with what someone says, or think that a particular newspaper is total nonsense, we recognize that each of us have the right to an opinion."

The post continued, "We also know that letting people express their views freely has real practical benefits. Allowing individuals to voice unpopular, inconvenient or controversial opinions is important. Not only might they be right (think Galileo) but debating difficult issues in the open often helps people come to better decisions".

Stop Redirecting Blogspot

While the company is clearly on the side of people freely expressing their opinions, they also believe that a line has to be drawn somewhere. Then again, for a company providing services in over 100 countries around the world and each with their own national laws and cultural norms, it's surely difficult for a company like Google to decide where to draw boundaries.

However, there are cases like child pornography which is illegal in just about any country where decisions are clear cut.

For a company whose products are "specifically designed to help people create and communicate, to find and share information and opinions across the world", how does Google deal with this challenge?

One of the most challenging areas where Google deals with issues regarding free expression is in Blogger, their content generation platform. Since Google can't check what you've written before you publish, they rely on active vocal users who are diligent in alerting the proper if a post borders on offensive. Then again, that in itself is a tricky issue as well because what one person may view as offensive, another might not.

In other words, it's always a work in progress with Google.

Fast forward to January 9, 2012 when Google announced it was making changes to the Blogger platform with regards to censorship. That said change would make use of a country specific domain to the Blogger platform. Doing this would allow Google to censor and remove content specific to a certain country.

In their announcement, Google said: "Migrating to localized domains will allow us to continue promoting free expression and responsible publishing while providing greater flexibility in complying with valid removal requests pursuant to local law. By utilizing ccTLDs, content removals can be managed on a per country basis, which will limit their impact to the smallest number of readers."

The move by Google come after pressure from countries like India that are working on hunting down content on social media sites which are considered inappropriate. Also, the move followed closely on the heels of Twitter's new censorship policies.

Since Google aims to "help people create and communicate, to find and share information and opinions across the world", it would be strange to take down a post that was just banned in a certain area. In essence, with country specific redirection, a piece of content can still be accessible by the world save for the country where it was blocked.

How Would Country Specific Redirection Affect Your Site?

Of course, not all site owners greeted the country specific URL change with open arms. A few of the issues brought up in regard to the change include:

1. A reduction in social stats. These are your Facebook Likes, Google +1s and so on from your blog posts. They might be reduced because the URLs from one blog post will be different depending on where your readers are from.

2. A problem with external commenting platforms. If you use Disqus - for example - for your comments section, then you might run into trouble because blog URLs will be different even if essentially the page being accessed is just the same.

3. A slight problem with AdSense earnings. Some users have complained about seeing a dip in their earnings when their pages are served through country specific domains.

4. An issue with link juice. You want external sites to link to you and not your country specific URL. But the issue here is that you can't control how others link to your page. They might use the top level domain or they might use the country code top-level domain.

Stop Blogger from Redirecting to Country-Specific Domains

If country specific redirection affects important factors such as traffic and link juice, and you need those in order to rank well, what can you possibly do? Well, thankfully, Google has provided a way to get around this. All you have to do is add an ncr/ to the end of the URL - ncr here stands for No Country Redirect. So basically, it goes

That solution is great but do you want your users to always have to do that every time they visit your blog? To eliminate that hassle, and for the good of your site statistics, a simple redirection script will do the trick. Here's how:

1. Log in to your Blogger account.

2. Click on Template → Edit HTML.

3. Find the <head> tag in the HTML editor by opening the search box using Ctrl + F.

search box blogger template html editor

4. Copy the redirection code seen below after the <head> tag.
<script type="text/javascript">
  // Written by Solvelogger
/* Get the full URL of the current blogger page */
  var blog = document.location.href.toLowerCase();
/* Do not redirect if the domain is .com already */
  if (!blog.match(/\.blogspot\.com/)) {
/* Replace the country TLD with .com and ncr switch */
    blog = blog.replace(/\.blogspot\..*?\//, "");
/* Redirect to the new .com URL in the current tab */
  // Source:
5. Click on "Save Template".

And that's it! Whenever someone accesses your Blogger, they'll be taken to the top level domain rather than the country specific one.

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing

How to Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing

Windows is probably the most popular operating system on the market. Although popular, it is not perfect. In fact, it could even be called infamous; it is known to run slowly, freeze, and crash on users frequently. On good systems this is rare, but when your computer suffers from a lack of maintenance, problems are to be expected.

Stop a Windows Computer from Freezing

Unfortunately most users don't perform routine maintenance on their systems. You don't need to be a computer expert to be able to perform simple maintenance, all it takes is a little of your time.

1. Run a virus scan. Viruses are usually the culprits behind random errors, freezing, and crashing. How to run a virus scan depends on what anti-virus software you have, but basically you select drive C: and/or other disks (especially hard disks) that you suspect to have a virus, and click a button to activate the scan.

2. Uninstall programs you no longer need. Unnecessary programs may not seem like much, but some of them do run idly in the background, and this takes up memory. To uninstall a program, enter the control panel and click "Add/Remove Programs," select the program you want to uninstall, and click "Change/Remove". You can also insert the installation CD and select uninstall, or look for a file something like "uninstall.exe" in the program files.

3. Close some applications. Do you always minimize programs rather than close them? Don't worry about that picture you have open, it won't go away after you close it. That web browser, just bookmark the page or save the process (saving if you have FireFox). Save what you want to save, and close the windows quickly before you decide you want them open (you should know that to close a program you click the little "x" in the upper right corner of the window, there is a more efficient way of doing this without using the mouse... press ALT+F4 to close the window, ALT+TAB to navigate through open windows).

4. Delete any files you no longer need.
This helps if you do it before defragmenting your disk, since there are fewer files for the defragmenter to move. Select the file(s) you want to delete, and press the "delete" key, or right click and click "delete".

5. Use the scheduled maintenance tool. Under the "accessories" folder in the start menu there is a folder called system tools. Depending on your version of Windows, there is a program with a name along the lines of "Maintenance Schedule Wizard." This program will help schedule disk cleanups, disk defragmentations, and more. They all help with keeping your computer's performance at the optimum. Note that in Windows XP it is called "Task Scheduler".

6. Clean up your registry. Find a registry cleaner or clean it manually. Don't clean it manually if you aren't comfortable changing important system settings. Also try using disk cleanup from the start menu under system tools. This folder can be found in accessories.

7. Defragment your hard disk.
Click START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>DISK DEFRAGMENTER. Follow the onscreen instructions and choose the C: drive. If you're wondering what this does, think if it this way: When you use your computer, files must be opened on your computer, then closed. When files are moved or deleted, they jump around on the part of the disk physically. Eventually the files are scattered everywhere, and it takes your computer longer to find them. By defragmenting your hard drive, you put all of the files close together again, and it's easier for the computer to find them. Defragmenting your drive may take anywhere from ten minutes to several hours depending on the size of the disk and the number of files.

8. Open up your computer case and dust it out.
Dust can make even the best computers run slowly. Unscrew the screws on the side of the case, remove large pieces of hardware and tie down cables, and start vacuuming out dust. Be careful not to suck in any jumpers, pins, wires, etc. You may find it necessary to start removing hardware to access other hardware. Be sure to dust out the heat sync and other fans. If you don't feel comfortable doing so, contact a tech-savvy friend or simply use an air-can. Don't worry too much, it's large amounts of dust that will cause real problems.
  • While you're in the computer, check the heat sync to see if it is faulty. This can cause any operating system to freeze, especially the higher NT versions of Windows.
  • Although the above suggests a vacuum cleaner to dust out a computer, there is a risk of static discharge. It isn't recommended that you do this if you are uncomfortable. Instead, try using an air duster. For removable fans, take them out and CAREFULLY clean them.

9. Format your disk and reinstall your operating system. Be sure to back up your data, for everything on your hard disk will be deleted.

10. Downgrade to a lower operating system (e.g.: From Windows XP to Windows 2000).
Your computer's specs may be too low to run the operating system at a satisfying level. The minimum requirements are MINIMUM, meaning that if you just meet them, you will just be able to run the operating system. For optimal performance, be sure to have at least the suggested specifications, not the minimum.

11. Consider running a small Linux distro.
Use a search engine to find a distribution of Linux that you think you would feel comfortable. Linux is another operating system, and is open source, meaning it's legally free. If you want an interface similar to the Windows interface, go with a KDE version. Try looking on Linux informative sites such as distrowatch for the most recent versions of Linux and reviews on the downloads.

12. Buy or build another computer.
Maybe not the solution you were looking for, but this is probably the best alternative if your computer fails to function properly after so much work. Remember that computers aren't designed to last a long time, most last about 2 to 5 years before hardware issues start showing up (this is not related to the Windows installation, which will usually last you about six months to a year on low maintenance).
  • When you want to get rid of a program, don't just delete the shortcut, uninstall it from the control panel. Deleting a shortcut is just that, deleting the quick file that executes the main executable on your desktop rather than directly. Uninstall programs rather than delete shortcuts.
  • Empty your recycle bin at least once a week. Even though the files are in the recycle bin, they take up space and sometimes still run.
  • Consider downloading or buying better maintenance tools. The tools included with Windows are just a start at what you want to do, and they might not be as good as other maintenance tools. If you have the hard disk space, download and install better maintenance tools, and be sure to use them.
  • It may sound silly, but consider using a lower screen resolution. See if it lowers the CPU usage.
  • Run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard. In the higher NT versions of Windows, there is a tool that allows you to clear unused shortcuts from your desktop. Right click on your desktop and go to properties, and find the Desktop Cleanup Wizard.
  • Beware of computer viruses online when you make any downloads. Scan zip folders before you extract them, scan executables, scan anything suspicious. Don't go overboard, though.
  • Be careful handling any computer hardware. If you don't feel comfortable handling computer hardware, ask a tech-savvy friend to help you.

Your computer may not see the hard drive correctly and can't boot into XP. You can check its status in BIOS (or CMOS Setup), but the step to access it depends on your computer's manufacturer.

Press one of these keys to enter BIOS/CMOS: "DEL" or "F1" or "F2" or "ESC".

Recreate the partitions

If your hard disk is setup correctly, you can recreate the partitions by installing Windows XP again.
The Error loading operating system error is more likely to appear if your partitions were also changed by another system before installing XP, e.g. a Linux distribution.
When you reinstall Windows XP, make sure you delete all partitions and create the partitions you need to install XP.

Update the BIOS

If none of the above fixes works for you, you can try and update your computer's BIOS. When starting up your computer check the messages at boot to determine your motherboard's manufacturer.

Press "Pause" key at boot to pause the loading messages.
You can also check the BIOS version when accessing BIOS Menu/CMOS Setup. Go to Check your hard drive status in BIOS menu above for the available keys to access it.

How to Fix a PC Which Won't Boot

How to Fix a PC Which Won't Boot

Computers are the way of the world. But there is nothing more annoying than a broken PC. PC's breakdown from time to time, it happens. This is a guide to repair a desktop computer that won't start up.

Fix a PC Which Won Boot

Step 1 :- First of all you have to determine the cause. Constantly restart the PC in order to confirm that it won't boot. Next you should try the PC on it's side to eliminate a connection error. This could either be a burnt out or worn contact or simply a connection which has come loose. After this you can start the process of fixing the problem..

Step 2 :- There are a couple of problems that will cause a computer not to boot these are: Corrupted BIOS, Corrupted Start up files, corrupted hard drive (containing startup files) or a broken motherboard.

Step 3 :- If absolutely nothing happens when you press the power switch:
  • Check that it is plugged in and switched on both at the wall and at the back of the base unit, check that the wall socket has power.
  • Check the power supply by removing it and testing it in another machine, if it works fine in another machine, check your power switch connections.
  • Check the fuse in the power supply; typically if it is blown, blackened, or the little thread inside is interrupted, when held against a light.
  • If the connections are fine it is likely that your motherboard has died.

Step 4 :- Check for a faulty Motherboard
  • Remove every connection and component from your motherboard except for the power, front panel, CPU assembly, RAM and graphics card, switch it on.
  • If you have more than one stick of RAM test them one at a time.
  • If this works then reconnect your other devices (Switch it off first!) one by one until you find out which one is causing the problem.
  • If your hear sounds of the disk starting, but nothing ever happens on the screen, the BIOS might be corrupted. That can happen when you try to flash it with a newer version, or if an ugly virus flashes it with garbage. If so, the BIOS needs to be reloaded correctly, or the chip replaced. Note: Not all computers have their BIOS in a flashable EPROM, so this might or might not apply.
  • If the board makes a sequence of loud beeps, there is a hardware error in one of the basic components. Two beeps mean 'no monitor found', four beeps 'no memory found', etc. (that list is not for sure). It is the BIOS reporting that it misses an elementary part to continue. Find out which part is broken (or really missing), and replace it.

Step 5 :- Replace the Boot Sector
  • Place windows installer disc into drive.
  • When prompted, press R to start the recovery console.
  • When asked which system you want to log into press 1, then enter.
  • You should now have a C:\WINDOWS\ prompt, type FIXBOOT, then press enter.
  • Type FIXMBR and press enter (that means 'FIX the Master Boot Record' = FIXMBR).
  • Reboot the machine, if it works, you are done.

Step 6 :- Check your BIOS settings
  • To enter the BIOS menu you must tap a certain key as soon as you switch on the PC, this is usually DEL or F2 but it will say on screen, e.g. 'PRESS DEL FOR SETUP'
  • All BIOS menus differ, what you are looking for is a bit called Primary Master, which should have some numbers after it, if it does, then your drive is not at fault, move on.
  • If Primary Master has no information after it your hard drive is not being detected, if you are able, change the setting next to Primary Master so that it says 'Auto'.
  • Save and exit the BIOS, if your computer boots, stop here.
  • If your hard drive is not detected this time you will need to open up the case and check the connections.

Step 7 :- Check for a faulty hard drive
  • Remove your hard drive and put it in another PC if possible.
  • If it does not work in another PC then it is dead, buy a new one.
  • If it does work in another PC, try using different cables.
  • If different cables make no difference your motherboard may be faulty.

Step 8 :- Another reason why pcs often do not start is that people accidentally remove their drives on the computer when safely removing usb's and other hardware devices..!!

Just click on Start, type RESMON and hit Enter to launch the tool. When it opens, click on the CPU, Memory, Disk and Network tabs to see which processes are hogging your system and using up your bandwidth. For example, if a process is locked up, right-click on it and select Analyze to see where the problem lies.

4. Repair your computer

If something goes seriously wrong and Windows 7 fails to start, it might be possible to repair your computer without the installation CD. Just boot your PC and press F8 during startup. You should see an option called Repair Your Computer. Select it and press Enter to see the recovery options Windows 7 has to offer.
These Windows 7 tools will help you troubleshoot and fix a slow computer in a quick and easy way. To prevent your computer from slowing down, use maintenance utilities like disk cleanup and defrag to keep your PC in top shape.

How to Restore DLL Files on Your Computer

How to Restore DLL Files on Your Computer

DLL, Dynamic Link Library files are the executable files developed by Microsoft Corporation. These files are similar to EXE files but contain certain codes, data and resources required to support shared library concept on various operating systems and it is used by many applications. These library files are saved with .dll file extension and sometimes with .ocx and .drv extensions. Dealing with these files is not easy. If any DLL file is missing or lost, then certain applications stop working and results in troublesome situations.

Fix Dll Error

Some of the most frequently occurring DLL file errors are run.dll, shell32.dll, system32.dllwmp.dll, kernell32.dll, rundll32.dll, xvid.dll, iframe.dll, kernel.dll and many more. These DLL files are mostly removed unintentionally. This generally happens while uninstalling a program; it may also so happen that there might be an occurrence of error because of any virus infecting the computer system. One need not worry when such a thing occurs as there are many ways in which this error can be repaired.

Installing software in addition to the operating system may overwrite shared system files such as dynamic link libraries (.dll files) and executable files (.exe files)", for MS Windows.

How to Restore DLL Files on PC

1. Missing DLL files that somehow disappear can cause your computer to act in strange ways, such as not shutting down properly.
Run a system disk scan in the Norton Antivirus suite. For instance Norton has a tool called "Windoctor" that makes repairs automatically. It is suggested that if you remove Norton for another free antivirus program, they retain Norton Utilities/ WinDoctor and Speed Disk for defragging.

2. Always run a scan on anything you download before you open it.
Remove programs that you don't use or need. Too many programs clog up the machine. Do periodic defragging. Anytime you download or remove programs, music, etc. plus the normal creation of files, it fragments the computer and slows and confuses its proper functions. "When system files are overwritten, such as .sys, .dll, .ocx, .ttf, .fon, and .exe files, system performance becomes unpredictable, programs behave erratically, and the operating system fails".

3. If it is determined that if you have one or more missing DLL files, that can be identified, and they can be replaced.
Find on Google, a site that offers free DLL file download websites. Download and unzip the file to the desktop. For this you need Winzip or WinRAR to extract the file.

4. Now you need to put the DLL file in the proper folder or subfolders in which the program's files are kept.
A way to find the program from which the DLL file is missing is by entering it into Google.

5. q_encutl.dll+program'. Take for example the message may be posted by 'Norton Windoctor': "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0701\

6. Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe" cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll." Download the file mscoree.dll.

7. By using 'Windows Explorer', you would in this case go to Local Disk [C] Program Files/Common Files/InstallShield/ and look through the subfolders until you find, in this case Professional/Run Time/Intel32.
In this case you cut and paste or copy the DLL into that folder. By copying instead of cut and paste, you can put the DLL download into your Documents folder as an extra copy.
  • If you don't have an unzip software you can find a free one at click Here
  • Sometimes software comes with .dll files included, so installing it may also fix other programs.
  • If it still doesn't work maybe you need to move the .dll file to another sub folder.
So this was our guide on How to Restore DLL Files on Your Computer, I hope the methods given above helped you.
How to Speed Up a Slow Windows 10, 8, 8.1, 7 or XP Computer

How to Speed Up a Slow Windows 10, 8, 8.1, 7 or XP Computer

Having a slow computer is not something most users fancy, but that is what most of us end up with after prolonged usage despite having the latest hardware. Understandably, there are also a few of us who are trapped with a low-end PC and are forced to get as much out of it as possible.

Increase computer speed

This article caters to both these type of users as it not only explains how to make your computer as fast as it was when new but also how to reduce the footprint of your system to utilize your PC's current system resources in the best possible way.

First thing first. Make sure your PC isn't infected by a virus, worm or other malware

Anyone who has used an infected computer will verify how painfully slow a computer becomes when infected by a virus. More tech savvy users will counter that an infected computer's speed depends upon the type of malware. To be honest, it does. However, based on my personal experience, I can say that while some malware are designed specifically for making computers slow and unresponsive, most malwares tend to decrease a computer's performance.

If your computer is infected, the first thing you need to do is deep scan your entire hard drive to remove all traces of the virus. Also, scan your secondary storage devices to make sure that they are clean as well. Additionally, make sure to follow best security practices to avoid getting infected in the future.

Remove unused and unnecessary programs

Now that we are sure that your computer is not slow because of a virus, you need to get rid of all the unnecessary programs that you have installed on your PC. To remove these programs, go to Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall your unnecessary programs one by one. If you are like most Windows users (including me) and are having a tough time figuring out which programs to uninstall as all of them seem important, follow this rule: If you have not used the program in the last month, it probably is unnecessary. It is better to uninstall that program given that you can reinstall it whenever required. It also is a good idea to remove all the useless software that came bundled with your computer. If you want, you can remove unused Windows features as well to further tone down your operating system.

Try faster alternatives to your everyday programs

If you use applications that require too much computing power to operate, you are better off replacing them with applications that do the same job as them but faster. Few resource hogging applications that you can replace are:-
1) Most resource intensive antivirus software can be replaced with the lightweight Microsoft Security Essentials.
2) Microsoft Office can be replaced with OpenOffice, an open source alternative that also has loads of amazing additions.
3) Adobe Reader can be replaced with the free Foxit Reader.
4) The newer versions of Internet Explorer are pretty fast. However, if you have been using an older version, it is time to upgrade IE or replace it with either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. This will also give you faster internet speeds.

Remove unnecessary startup programs

Startup programs are the programs which start automatically each time a user logs on. Not only do they result in a slow startup, but they also run persistently, until you close them manually, continuously consuming valuable system resources (CPU and RAM) while they are running. So, disabling unnecessary startup items results in both a faster startup and a more responsive computer, as these applications not running continuously means more RAM and CPU will be available for the operations you perform on the computer.

To disable unnecessary startup programs, type msconfig in the search bar in Start menu (in Windows 7 and Windows Vista) and on the Start screen in Windows 8 and 8.1. On Windows XP, type this in the Run dialog box. This will start the System Configuration utility. Click on the Startup tab and disable all the applications that you think are not essential on your computer's startup. Restart your computer to see the changes. Keep in mind to not disable your security products as that will make your computer more susceptible to getting infected.

Restart your computer often

This is assuming that you continuously use your computer for long periods of time. Each time when you close a running program in Windows. it frees the memory that the program was occupying. However, it may so happen that some parts of the memory do not get freed which results in less system resources available to you to use which ultimately results in a slower PC. When you restart your computer, these occupied spaces in the memory get freed. Although, this memory issue has been somewhat fixed in recent versions of Windows, it still is a good idea to reboot your computer at least once a day.

Check your hard drive for errors

Over time, as you use your computer, chances are that some errors might creep in your hard disk which negatively affect your computer's performance. The best way to solve this issue is by using the inbuilt Disk Check utility available in all versions of Windows. To use it, execute chkdsk /r in the Command Prompt. Remember to open the Command Prompt as an administrator. It might prompt you to restart your computer. Execute Y to restart your PC. The chkdsk/ r command scans your computer's hard drive for errors and recovers readable data. Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this step might take some time. This step might increase your computer's performance phenomenally if there are a lot of errors on your hard drive.

Make sure you have enough free space

System speed is not only dependant upon CPU and RAM. If your hard drive is above 95% full, you will notice that your system hasn't been running at the fastest speed. This happens because Windows require empty space for swap files to increase in size and also as space for temporary files. It is imperative that the more cluttered and filled a hard drive is, the more difficult it is to read. To solve this issue, delete unnecessary data or move it to external storage devices.

Repair protected Windows system files

As you use your computer, it is possible that one or more system files get damaged or get corrupted which might effect your system's performance in a negative way. Thus, it is important to check that all your system files are original and behaving as they should. The best way to check your operating system's files is through the System File Checker. To run the System File Checker, open Command Prompt as an Administrator and execute sfc /scannow. This command will check all your system files and if it finds that some of them are modified or corrupt, it will replace them with the original. This step can take anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes but is one that you should perform especially if your system has ever been infected by a virus.

Disable unnecessary visual effects

The visual effects that make your computer look beautiful also slow it down considerably. So, if you want to get the best performance out of your computer, you should disable all these visual effects. To disable these visual effects:-
1) Press Windows Key+R to launch the Run dialog box.
2) Execute sysdm.cpl.
3) Go to the Advanced tab in the following Window and click on Settings in the Performance section.
4) Then encircle Adjust for best performance. If you want to use visual styles and themes, check it (located at the very end of the list).
5) Click on Apply to apply the changes.

Disabling these visual effects could lead to a considerable improvement in your system's performance especially if you are on Windows 7 or Windows Vista and using the Aero interface without a graphic card.

Do not run multiple antivirus programs

Make sure that no more than one antivirus program is running on your PC. An antivirus's resident protection takes a lot of resources. So, having more than one antivirus program would bring about a significant reduction in your computer's speed.

Disable sound schemes

Whenever you perform an action in Windows, a sound is played to indicate it. Although it leads to a better user experience, it also contributes towards slowing your PC down. To make your PC a lean work machine, you should disable these sounds. To disable these, open Sounds from the Control Panel or alternately type mmsys.cpl in the Run dialog box. Go to the Sound tab and select "No Sounds" from the Sounds scheme dropdown list and click Apply.

Update Windows and make sure that you are using the latest drivers for your hardware

Having all the updates ensures that your computer is running the best possible version of your operating system and your hardware is being utilized by the best possible code. Also, an updated operating system makes you more secure against future intrusions by performance reducing malware.

Use a Registry Cleaner to keep your Registry in good shape

The Windows Registry is a place which keeps information about all installed programs and active system files on your system. Over time, as you install and uninstall programs, the Registry can get filled with useless entries which might increase its size making it difficult to read. This happens because most uninstallers don't remove the program's Registry entries during an uninstall. Also, the larger the Registry is on your computer, the more time Windows will take to start.

To solve this issue, use any free Registry cleaner to remove useless entries. Depending upon the number of entries in your Registry and its size, you might see a significant increase in your computer's performance.

Delete Temporary Files

Temporary files are stored in your computer as Windows operates. They are files that contain your recently accessed files list, log files, your internet history, form history, cookies and temporary internet files. Over time, the number of these files increases and cleaning them becomes important. You can use CCleaner (mentioned above) to clean them or the inbuilt Windows Disk Cleanup utility by executing cleanmgr.exe in the Run dialog box. You can also schedule a disk cleanup to ensure that it happens automatically.

Disable Windows Search Indexing Service

The Windows search indexing service scans all the files and folders on your system and stores information about them in a database to make searches faster. Naturally, this results in consumption of resources. If you don't use Windows Search often or are willing to trade faster searches for a faster computer (as you should), disable the indexing service. To disable it, execute services.msc in the Run dialog box. In the work area on the right side, locate Windows Search service and double click on it. In the following Properties dialog box, select Disabled from the Startup type dropdown and click OK. Restart your computer. Your searches will be slow but your computer will be faster than ever.

Check Device Manager to look for hardware conflicts

Open Device Manager to see that all the connected hardware are functioning properly. If you find a hardware conflict, take the necessary steps to resolve it. If the conflict cannot be resolved, disconnect the problematic hardware until you find a solution.

Change to High Performance power scheme

If you are running your computer on a battery and notice that it is running slow, change the power scheme to high performance to increase system speed. Keep in mind that it will increase the amount of power consumed by your computer. To change the power scheme, open Power Options from the Control Panel. You can directly search for Power Options in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 from the Start Screen/Menu.

Check if your computer is overheating

If your computer is overheating, then it is possible that it is causing your computer to run slowly. This is because most modern processors slow down when the computer is overheated to allow the computer to cool down.

To prevent your computer from overheating, make sure that the cooling fan works properly and that there is no dust clogging the air vents as it will prevent air flow which will result in poor cooling. Clean your computer's case with a light brush and place it somewhere where it can be effectively cooled by air. If you use a laptop, a cooling pad might be of help.

Defragment your hard drive

When Windows stores a file on your hard drive, it does not look for a single place to store your file as a whole. Instead, it stores the fragments of the file randomly, i.e storing them at whatever empty space it can find the quickest. Due to this, the fragments of a single file can be scattered all across a hard disk. A hard drive that has many files distributed like this is called as fragmented. Naturally, this results in slower file access times because Windows needs to find all these pieces and put them together (something like a jigsaw puzzle) before the file can be accessed.

This is what defragmentation corrects. When you defragment a hard drive, the scattered pieces of a file are put together and stored on the hard disk in continuous cells (assuming a hard disk to be made up of a large number of cells with each cell representing a particular storage space).

To defragment your hard drive, you can use the in-built Windows Disk Defragmenter utility. It can be searched on the Start Screen in Windows 8 & 8.1 and is located at Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools in older versions of Windows.

Use ReadyBoost to increase the speed of your Windows computer

If you are running a computer that does not have enough RAM, using a flash drive with the ReadyBoost technique can and will give you significant improvement in speed. As with ReadyBoost, your flash drive becomes a cache that stores files that you might immediately require giving you faster access times than if those files had been stored on a hard disk.

Keep in mind that ReadyBoost depends upon the condition of your flash drive and was intended to increase speeds of devices which were short on RAM. If you already have a sufficient amount of RAM, chances are that you might see very little to no improvement in speed by using it.

Reinstall Windows

This is one of the more drastic methods and should only be used if all the methods mentioned above fail to bring any significant increase in your computer's speed.

If you haven't reinstalled Windows in a really long time, it is possible that because of constant use, the system has got bogged down with useless clutter in a way that no amount of tweaking will fix its condition. Then, reinstalling Windows is the only option.

Reinstalling Windows brings about a definite increase in speed but gives you a new PC without all your software and customization. Modifying it according to your needs will take a lot of time though but that is something you must sacrifice for a faster PC.

If you use Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, you can refresh your PC without affecting your installed apps and settings. To refresh your Windows 8 PC, open Update and Recovery by going to Change PC Settings from the Settings button that appears when you move your mouse pointer to the right side of your screen. Under it, click Recovery. Then under Refresh your PC without affecting files, click Get Started.

Upgrade to a solid state HDD

Although solid state hard drives are a lot faster for writing and reading data than older optical hard drives, their heavy price is something that keeps them out of the range of many. Still, if you do manage to get one for your PC, the change in speed will be immediately visible.

If all else fails, get more RAM

RAM or the Random Access Memory contains all files of the currently running programs that are immediately required by the computer. Accessing files from the RAM is much faster than doing the same from a hard disk. This means that more the RAM you have, more the programs you can run without compromising on speed. RAM upgrades do not cost much and are one of the best ways to speed up a slow computer.
